Russia and China boycott a closed meeting of the Security Council on Syria … and Moscow demands that the discussions be public and transparent

Last night, Russia and China boycotted a closed video conference in the Security Council on Western allegations of chemical weapons in Syria.

The French press agency quoted the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenizia, as saying in a press conference via the internet that Moscow has “one requirement that discussions take place in an open framework … but unfortunately our Western partners and their allies insisted on holding this meeting in a closed session … despite the slogans of openness” And transparency in the Security Council.

“An approach like this is unacceptable to us because it undermines the powers of the states parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention,” he added.

For his part, a diplomat, who requested anonymity, said that the windows of Russia and China on the screen during the virtual meeting were empty.

During the monthly meeting, members of the Security Council were to hear two reports from the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu and the Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Fernando Arias.

It is noteworthy that many leaks from current and former officials of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons appeared during the past months and prove the deliberate manipulation of the organization’s recent report on the alleged use of chemical weapons in the town of Latamna in 2017 and describes it as deficient and politicized and that it is marred by fatal scientific errors.
