Putin: We will consider doing more to help the Lebanese after the Beirut explosion

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday expressed Moscow‘s intention to provide more support to Lebanon, after the devastating explosion that rocked the Beirut port recently.

In a meeting he held with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council, Putin described the Beirut explosion as a tragic accident, noting that a group formed from the Russian emergency and health ministries under his direction had arrived in the city.

The president continued, “Our colleagues have begun work in the Lebanese capital after the port explosion, and we will consider doing more to help people in this country.”

The explosion, which is the strongest in the history of Beirut, shook the Lebanese capital last Tuesday, and it is considered that its reason lies in the extension of a fire that broke out inside the port of the city to a warehouse in which a large shipment of highly flammable and explosive ammonium nitrate had been stored in it since 2013, despite experts’ warnings to officials at the port.

The explosion resulted, according to the latest data, killing at least 154 people and wounding five thousand, in addition to massive material damage to the city.
