The resumption of air traffic between China and the United States

The US Department of Transportation said on Monday that the United States and China will allow four weekly flights between the two countries, easing the standoff over travel restrictions in the midst of the emerging Corona Virus pandemic.

Delta Airlines said it will resume passenger flights to Shanghai from Seattle next week via Seoul, and once a week from Seattle and Detroit starting in July, after the approval of the Chinese government.

The Ministry of Transportation said in a statement that it will continue to press for the restoration of all passenger flights between the United States and China, noting that partly the Chinese students who were unable to return to their country due to the lack of flights will be partially allowed to return.

“Since the Chinese government will allow more flights by American airlines, we will do the same,” she added.

A person familiar with the matter said that the Chinese authorities have agreed to some changes regarding the requirements of American airlines flying there, including permitting temperature checks before taking off flights to China, rather than mid-flight as previously discussed.
