Damascus announces economic agreements with the Libyan interim government

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the activation of 8 joint companies between Syria and Libya, and work to activate the terms of 46 bilateral agreements, and said that “the coming days will witness a Libyan openness to the Syrian economy.”

During a seminar held in the presence of the Libyan delegation in Damascus, Syrian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Miqdad said: “There is an agreement between the two sides on the economic level to open all areas of cooperation, enhance trade exchange and joint companies, open horizons for aviation and ports, and operate the Syrian workforce in Libyan projects.”

Miqdad stressed that “Libyan delegations will visit Damascus in the coming days, and Libya will also visit Syria‘s delegations to discuss relations in various aspects and ways of strengthening them, especially in the sectors of economy, tourism, transportation and aviation.”

He continued: “Libya has relied in many of its economic relations in the past on Turkey, the common enemy now,” expressing his confidence that “the Libyan leadership wants to end relations with the Turkish regime in order to start real relations with Syria.”

He stressed that “the Syrian-Libyan relations are moving forward in the right direction, especially towards eliminating terrorism and cooperation to end the criminal role against the two countries.”

For his part, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Libyan interim government, Abd al-Hadi al-Hawij, said, “The return of relations between the two countries is a historic and important step,” pointing to “seeking to establish a strategic partnership and a new alliance to serve the interests of the two peoples.”

He added, “Most of the goods and products in Libya were imported from Turkey, but the legitimate government (the Libyan interim government) wants to change the compass toward the Syrian products and companies.”

On the internal situation in Libya, Al-Hawaij stressed that his country “seeks to eliminate armed militias, disarm from outlaws, restore security and stability, normal life and restore national sovereignty.”

He stressed that “the government headed by Abdullah Al-Thani believes that Libya is for all Libyans.”
