The United States: We are coordinating with Turkey in response to the Syrian army’s attack

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, confirmed that the United States is coordinating with Turkey “response” to the attack on Turkish forces, by the Syrian army in the Idlib region in northern Syria.

“I extend my condolences to the families of the military who were killed yesterday by the attack in the Idlib area,” Pompeo said in a tweet posted on Tuesday on his Twitter account. The continued attacks by the Assad regime and Russia must stop. ”

Pompeo said he sent the US special representative on Syria to Ankara to “coordinate steps in response to this destabilizing attack.” The US Secretary of State concluded, “The United States should support Turkey as an ally of NATO.”

The advance of the Syrian army in Idlib, the last stronghold of the militants in the country, has led to a significant escalation of tensions with Turkey, which accuses the Syrian authorities led by President Bashar al-Assad of launching continuous attacks on Turkish soldiers in the region and in breach of the Sochi Agreement on the armistice there.

On Monday, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced the death of 5 of its soldiers and the injury of 5 others in “intense artillery shelling by the Syrian regime” at a control post of the Turkish army in the town of Taftanaz in the northeastern Idlib countryside.
