The 170 members of the US House of Representatives from both parties signed a letter sent to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken calling on President Joe Biden’s administration to address human rights issues in its dealings with Turkey.
The letter, dated February 26, published on Monday, stated that “Turkey, a member of NATO, has been an important partner of the United States for a long time, and that the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has caused a rift in the relationship.”
The letter, signed by Democratic Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Greg Meeks and prominent Republican member Mike, indicated that “properly strategic issues have received great attention in our bilateral relationship, but the flagrant violation of human rights and democratic backsliding in Turkey are also a source of great concern.”
On February 20, Erdogan said, “The common interests between Turkey and the United States outweigh their differences, and that Turkey wants better cooperation with Washington.”
