US must choose between failed legacy of Trump, JCPOA

The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran assessed the atmosphere of the Vienna talks as positive, but said that the US President should choose between adhering to the failed legacy of the Trump administration or distancing himself from those policies and returning to the commitments of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Saeed Khatibzadeh, in an interview with NBC’s “Morning Joe” program on NBC, said in response to a question about the atmosphere in the Vienna, “The atmosphere is positive, although progress has been inadequate, it has been so great that the drafting and understanding phase between the parties has now begun.”

He added: “Given that there are differences over issues, the process is not fast. It is important for Washington to know that the Vienna talks are not about a new round of bargaining.”

The spokesman noted: “All trade-offs and bargaining ended in July 2015. We are now meeting in Vienna to focus on how the United States can return to full compliance with the agreement and the commitment plan. It is too early to judge and conclude in any way.”

Khatibzadeh stressed that the US return to the JCPOA is highly dependent on the US itself, stating: “Now is the time for a political decision by US President Joe Biden to either tell his administration to stick to the Trump administration’s failed legacy or move away from that legacy and policy and stick to the commitments made in the nuclear deal signed by the then President Obama, of which Joe Biden was the then Vice President.”

He also went on to say: “It’s high time for President Biden to make a decision.”
