“They will be full of challenges and difficult”: Biden’s advisor assessed the prospects for the development of Russian-American relations

US relations with Russia under US President Joe Biden will be difficult. This was stated by the adviser to the President of the United States on national security Jake Sullivan, speaking at a webinar at the Washington Institute for Peace.

He stressed that President Biden’s approach to relations with Moscow is “devoid of illusions, well thought out, and practical.”

“They will be full of challenges and complex, since Russia poses a threat in many directions,” RIA Novosti quotes Sullivan.

He also listed a number of charges against Russia, including hacker attacks, the Alexei Navalny case, “election interference” and alleged bounties on the heads of American soldiers in Afghanistan. Sullivan added that the US is studying the answer to them.

Russia, meanwhile, has previously denied the US accusations on all of these points.

As Sullivan added, Washington will study these issues and “try to get to the bottom of how wide and scale they are.”

Commenting on the extension of the strategic START-3 Treaty, Sullivan indicated that this is only the beginning of “serious” negotiations with Russia. In his opinion, there should be serious, thorough negotiations on the entire spectrum of nuclear challenges and threats outside the START-3 Treaty.

“We must be able to make Russia pay and face the consequences for its aggressive behavior and threats to the United States and our allies, and at the same time conduct credible, serious, disillusioned strategic negotiations with them (Russia – ed.)Sullivan emphasized.
