Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, confirmed today that Washington’s deployment of low-energy nuclear warheads is the one that destabilizes global nuclear deterrence, not Russian measures.
Commenting on the statements of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Robert Sofer, in which he accused Russia recently of starting an non-strategic arms race, Antonov told Sputnik that it is Washington’s implementation of such equipment for strategic warheads that poses a threat to the stability of global nuclear deterrence and not what is attributed to Russia’s determination to destabilize nuclear stability. .
Antonov pointed out that Pentagon officials are using accusatory excuses to justify Washington’s policy of lowering the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, and in particular there is talk of deploying low-energy nuclear warheads, calling on the Pentagon representatives to conduct direct dialogue with Russia on issues of strategic stability.
And Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov announced last month that Moscow did not expect any breakthrough in the next round of Russian-American consultations in Vienna on limiting strategic weapons.
