Turkish opposition: Erdogan is working to establish armed militias under the name of neighborhood guards

The Turkish opposition confirmed that Rajep Tayip Erdogan‘s regime is working to establish armed militias loyal to it under the name of “neighborhood guards”.

According to the Turkish Parliament approved a controversial bill today that greatly enhances the powers of the so-called neighborhood guards, as the study of the text in Parliament led to intense discussions and the matter reached a fist in hands during a tumultuous session last Tuesday.

The elements of these militias will be able to possess and use firearms and intercept individuals to verify their identities or search them, while Erdogan‘s regime claims that their mission is to conduct night patrols to report thefts and breaches of public order where these powers are the same as those enjoyed by the police.

“They are using the Neighborhood Guard Foundation to create a militia,” said Maher Polat, a member of the opposition Republican People’s Party, the largest opposition party.

In turn, Deputy Haqi Saruhan Oloch of the HDP emphasized that “by strengthening the guards, the ruling party is trying to find additional conditions and means to increase pressure on society, maintain power and weaken the rule of law further.”

The group of neighborhood guards that was established more than a century ago and linked to the Turkish Ministry of Interior has evolved significantly after the failed coup attempt that took place in July 2016 against Erdogan and currently stands at more than 28 thousand and the new law includes an increase to 200 thousand, knowing that the Turkish police number is 250 alpha.
