Ciaoş Oghlo: We are counting on holding the “Astana” summit on Syria

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoglu announced that Turkey is counting on holding a tripartite summit in the form of “Astana” with Russia and Iran on Syria after contacting the leaders of the three countries via video.

“The situation in the region is tense,” Ciaoş Oghlo said during a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mohammed Javad Zarif, who visited Turkey on Monday. In Syria, we have been working for a long time with Russia and Iran, and everyone sees the results of this work. ”

“But we have to take certain steps,” he added, noting that the Syrian Constitutional Committee is scheduled to hold a meeting in August.

Ciaoş Oghlo discussed with Zarif some bilateral issues as well. He confirmed that it is planned to return flights between the two countries as of August 1, after being suspended due to the spread of Corona virus.

The Turkish minister also affirmed the two countries’ determination to continue “fighting terrorism” and Turkey‘s opposition to unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

For his part, Zarif thanked his Turkish counterpart for helping to fight the Corona virus in Iran, noting that the epidemic “showed the extent to which countries are related to each other and that unilateral policies are not a solution.”

In the aftermath of the meeting, Zarif wrote on Twitter that his discussions with Ciaoş Oghlo were “constructive and fruitful,” and views were exchanged on bilateral cooperation issues and regional and international issues, indicating that he would go to Moscow after his visit to Turkey.

It is noteworthy that Zarif became the first foreign minister to visit Turkey in the months since the outbreak of the Corona virus.
