On Wednesday (May 13), Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi participated in a video conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization foreign ministers.
The meeting was chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who holds the organization’s rotating presidency this year. The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of the SCO member states, its secretary general, and the director of the executive committee of the organization’s regional counter-terrorism agency.
Noting that the emerging corona virus (Covid-19) disease continues to spread around the world, Wang said the organization needs to continue to support the Shanghai spirit and the vision of a community of common destiny for humankind, in conjunction with its need to enhance solidarity, coordination and take proactive actions.
“We must invest the strength of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to achieve an early victory over disease and bring economic and social development back to normal in the region and beyond,” Wang said.
To this end, Wang urged the SCO member states to enhance solidarity, coordination and joint participation in the global battle of victory over disease, support security cooperation to protect peace and stability at the regional level, enhance cooperation and mutual benefits and achieve common development, support pluralism and joint defense of the system International and its consolidation.
The participants in the meeting expressed their concern about the severe impact of the disease on economic and social development in the world, and stressed that the international community should adhere to multi lateralism and activate the leading and coordinating role of the United Nations system and unite in the battle against the disease.
The meeting adopted a statement by the organization’s foreign ministers on the response to Covid-19 disease.
