Experts warn that young people who suddenly lose their sense of smell and taste may be “hidden carriers” of the Corona virus.
Otolaryngologists have said that people who suffer from loss of smell and taste, a condition known as deficiency (olfactory loss), can facilitate the rapid international spread of Covid-19.
The British Society of Neuroscience, which studies the nose and sinuses, says it has seen increasing numbers of young people last month suffering from a loss of smell or taste.
It is feared that these people will spread the deadly virus – because they do not currently meet the current standards for testing or self-isolation.
“I have personally seen 4 patients this week, all under the age of 40, and they do not have any symptoms except the appearance of an olfactory loss – I usually don’t see more than one case per month,” said Claire Hopkins, chair of the British Society of Nasalities. I think these patients may be among the hidden carriers, who have facilitated the rapid spread of Covid-19. Unfortunately, these patients do not meet current standards for testing or self-isolation. ”
A study of international cases conducted by the profession of the British Society of Otolaryngology and the British Society of Otolaryngology (ENT UK) found that a large proportion of Corona virus patients reported a loss of smell or taste, or both.
In Germany, two cases hit all 3 cases of loss of sense of smell, while in South Korea, where the test is more prevalent, said 30% of patients who tested positive disease, the loss of the sense of smell was president opposed them.
Hopkins added: “There is already good evidence from South Korea, China, and Italy that large numbers of patients, who have been diagnosed with Covid-19, have lost their sense of smell. In addition, there was a rapidly increasing number of reports that the number of patients with olfactory loss was dwindling, in the absence of other symptoms.
ENT urged officials to acknowledge loss of smell and taste as an official sign of the deadly disease, and said they had told the England Public Health Authority about the apparent link.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization also said it is investigating the relationship between loss of smell and taste and Covid-19.
The country’s chief scientist, Patrick Valance, said that loss of smell or taste is a feature of the Corona virus. It is believed that a loss of ability to smell or taste may be due to the destruction of cells in the nose and throat.
Experts say it is something people can usually test after infection with other types of viruses – such as the common cold.
