Syria participates in 10th meeting of (IRTVU) General Assembly, Tehran

The 10th Meeting of the General Assembly of the Islamic Radios and Televisions Union (IRTVU) kicked off on Tuesday in the Iranian capital city of Tehran, under the slogan “Media Justice and Freedom of Expression,” with the participation of Information Minister Imad Sarah via video conference technology, as well as representatives of member states, political experts and cultural officials.

This round is held via electronic means, in conjunction and partnership with a number of Arab and Islamic capitals and cities, namely Tehran, Baghdad, Beirut, Sanaa, Gaza, Kabul and Istanbul, in addition to a number of participants via the special electronic application from the rest of the world.

Members of the Union, whose number before the current round amounted to 228 distributed in 33 countries, and who speak more than 22 languages within 130 visual satellite channels, 53 radios, 32 production and media institutions, 4 virtual space institutions, and 9 news agencies, will participate in this round.

The meeting will be held for one day in two sessions, morning and evening, each lasting for three hours, while media personalities, a number of information ministers from several countries, a group of experts in the field of the title of the session, in addition to speakers that include general managers of the General Assembly of the Union, members of the Supreme Council, its president and the Secretary-General of the Union will participate in the opening session.

In this session, a report will be screened on the Palestinian media institutions that were destroyed by the Israeli occupation forces in the recent aggression on the Gaza Strip, in addition to the election of a new Secretary-General, two deputies and a new Supreme Council of the Union and its president after the end of the mandate of the current Supreme Council.

The members will discuss the organizational decisions related to the programmatic, training and knowledge areas of cooperation, joint production and the programs that the union will implement in the coming years, in addition to discussing the services provided by the institutions affiliated to the Union’s Secretariat-General by presenting work reports on the past years for their institutions working in various fields, in addition to announcing the union award for news, program and knowledge exchange and annual training for the year 2020.

The meeting will also discuss the internal organizational issues of the union, as the agenda includes nine multiple items, the most important of which are launching new projects, accepting new memberships, and developing the regulations and laws currently in force.

The current round of the General Assembly comes in light of the US Treasury’s decision to prevent financial dealings with the Union and the unjust decision to close some websites belonging to a number of the Union’s channels in a number of Arab and Islamic countries for false and incorrect reasons, which prompted the Arab and Islamic media to stand by the media institutions whose websites have been blocked and to express full solidarity with these institutions and the union and its great role.
