Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Faysal Mikdad, discussed on Monday with UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and an accompanying delegation, a number of issues related to the situation in Syria.
Talks during the meeting dealt with the political process and the economic situation as viewpoints were in agreement that unilateral coercive measures increase difficulty of the situation, particularly in light of the spread of the Corona epidemic.
Mikdad affirmed that the US and Turkish occupation of Syrian territory and practices of the Turkish occupation in northeastern Syria, and its support for terrorists violate the Syrian sovereignty, international law and all relevant Security Council resolutions.
He pointed out to the humanitarian impacts of the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people despite the spread of the Corona pandemic, as well as the criminal and repressive practices of QSD militia against the Syrian people in the provinces of Hasaka, Raqqa and Deir Ezzor.
Mikdad called on the United Nations “to raise its voice in accordance with the charter and international resolutions issued by Security Council in the face of all such practices and to take a clear stance towards them in light of principles and objectives upon which international humanitarian law is based.”
The two sides stressed the importance of guaranteeing non-interference in the affairs of the Committee of discussing the Constitution and that all this process is carried out by leadership of Syria, and that no timetables are set for its work imposed from outside.
In this regard, Mikdad stressed the importance for the special envoy to maintain his role as an impartial facilitator.
