The speaker of the Arab Parliament, Adel bin Abdulrahman Al-Asoumi, launched a sharp attack on Turkey and its defense minister, Hulusi Akar, against the backdrop of a recent visit he described as “provocative” to Libya.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Al-Osoumi affirmed his “complete rejection of the hostile statements and threats made by the Turkish Defense Minister during his recent provocative visit to Libya, and before that the Turkish Parliament approved keeping Turkish soldiers in Libya for 18 months.”
Al-Asoumi stressed that such actions “all represent a direct violation of the sovereignty of the State of Libya and a flagrant violation of its national security, and a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and UN Security Council resolutions on the ban on the supply of arms and the sending of mercenaries and foreign fighters to the state of Libya.”
Al-Asoumi added that “the visit of the Turkish Defense Minister to Libya and the threats he made during it and Turkey’s escalation of its blatant interference in the internal affairs of Libya, comes at a time when the ceasefire in Libya continues, as well as the completion of the first prisoner exchange process between the Libyan parties” today. And he considered that this matter “reveals the malicious Turkish intentions to obstruct all efforts to solve the crisis politically in Libya, and its insistence on thwarting the political path sponsored by the United Nations and keeping the Libyan conflict open indefinitely in line with its ambitions for the wealth and capabilities of the Libyan people.”
Al-Asoumi called on the UN Security Council to take immediate and urgent action to stop the repeated Turkish interference in Libyan internal affairs, and to take the necessary measures to expel Turkish and foreign mercenaries and fighters from the Libyan lands, in order to ensure the sovereignty of Libya over its entire territory, and to enable the Libyan parties to reach a political and final solution to the crisis by a Libyan will. Al-Osoumi expressed the Arab Parliament’s “full support and absolute support for the sincere efforts made by the Arab countries to solve the Libyan crisis, especially the efforts made by Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.”
Earlier on Sunday, the Turkish Defense Minister warned the “Libyan National Army” led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar that its forces and supporters would be a “legitimate target” in all places, after every attempt to attack the Turkish forces.
Turkey is the largest external supporter of the Libyan Government of National Accord, which is based in the capital, Tripoli, in its confrontation with the Libyan National Army, led by Haftar, who is supported by Egypt.
