France’s far-right Front National leader Marine Le Pen has expressed her support for President Emmanuel Macron in his ongoing dispute with his Turkish counterpart Rajep Tayyip Erdoğan over a string of issues, including hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Mediterranean
Erdoğan’s “threats” target France, Anadolu cited Le Pen as telling French LCI TV channel, and the French politician “resolutely backs’’ Macron on the issue, despite having “millions of issues’’ the pair cannot agree on.
France and Turkey are at odds over a number of issues, including war-torn Libya and Syria, as well as Turkey’s claims on hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Mediterranean, where France has sent its own naval ships to support Greece, which lays claim to waters Turkey says is on its own continental shelf.
On Sept.10, Macron urged the EU to adopt a “united and clear voice” with respect to Turkey, accusing Ankara of “no longer [being] a partner’’ in the region due to its recent actions in the eastern Mediterranean and its involvement in the Libyan civil war.
The French president also said that Turkish people “deserve more than the Erdogan government.”
Erdoğan hit back on his French counterpart, urging Macron not to “mess with the Turkish people and Turkey.”
“Mr Macron, you’re going to have more problems with me,” Erdoğan added.
