First batch of Russian COVID vaccine released for public use

The first batch of the Sputnik V vaccine against the COVID-19, developed by the Gamaleya research center, has entered circulation, the Russian Health Ministry confirmed in a statement.

It was granted permission for widespread usage after having passed the necessary quality tests in the labs of Federal Service for Surveillance in Healthcare (Roszdravnadzor), according to the statement. Regional delivery of the first batch is expected “in the near future,” the ministry added.

The government in Moscow had announced in August that Russia has become the first country to create a working vaccine for the coronavirus disease, scheduled to be introduced in stages with the release to be finalized by January 1.
