Wall Street Journal said that US President Donald Trump‘s administration is preparing to impose a new package of sanctions against Syria and plans to expand its blacklist by focusing on external financial support networks.
US officials said it was a fresh effort by the Trump administration to force Damascus into peace talks.
The newspaper reported that with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad securing political and military gains in recent months, US officials hope that targeting the financial artery of Damascus from his supporters in other countries will intensify international pressure for peace and peaceful transformation.
It also made clear that Washington seeks to impede rapprochement and relations with Syria from countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, according to Western officials.
