Trump to attend Paris conference to help support Lebanon

United States President Donald Trump, told his Lebanese counterpart Michel Aoun, in a phone call, that he will be at Paris conference called for by French President Emmanuel Macron to support Lebanon and provide aid, Lebanese presidency announced on twitter on Friday.

The Lebanese presidency said that President Trump assured President Aoun that he would participate in the Paris conference, which Macron called to support Lebanon and provide it with urgent aid.

It reported that President Aoun received a phone call from Donald Trump, during which he offered his condolences and the American people to the victims of the explosion in the Beirut port, confirming that he stood by Lebanon in these circumstances and that urgent aid would be sent to Lebanon in solidarity with its people.

Aoun thanked President Trump for his solidarity and the support decided for Lebanon, explaining the circumstances of the explosion and the losses of lives, infrastructure and destruction that befell Beirut.

Aoun stated that his country needs to work together to preserve Lebanon’s security and social stability and cooperate in order to advance it, stressing that the reform process is underway and he is working to implement many of them.

He also said that he hopes to cooperate together in fighting real corruption and holding the corrupt accountable.

President Aoun stated that he also hoped the United States would help finalize the maritime border demarcation file.

Macron said on Thursday that France will organize an international aid conference for Lebanon, and he promised “transparent governance” so the aid goes to the people, NGOs and relief groups and not to the ruling elite which has been accused of corruption and mismanagement.
