Greece calls Turkey to stop “illegal business” in the Eastern Mediterranean

The Greek Foreign Ministry said that Athens had urged Turkey to stop illegal actions in the eastern Mediterranean, and considered these activities “provocative and undermine peace and security in the region.”

The Greek foreign ministry statement made it clear that Greece “will not accept blackmail. It will defend its sovereign rights. ”

The Turkish Navy had issued a notification saying that the Turkish ship, “Eruj Reis,” would conduct a seismic survey in a disputed area in the eastern Mediterranean during the next two weeks.

This move is likely to renew tension with Greece, which is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization like it.

The countries are at odds over the overlapping claims of oil and gas resources in the Mediterranean region. A similar notification last month sparked a row between the two sides, which was defused after the intervention of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
