At least 16 people were killed and more than 120 injured in the crash of an Indian passenger plane today, Friday, coming from Dubai, with 191 people on board, as it landed during bad weather and heavy rain at the airport in South India.

The Air India Express plane crashed at Kozhikode Airport in Calicut, Kerala state, where officials said it was split in two.

Rajiv Jin, a spokesman for the Ministry of Civil Aviation, said that no fire was reported on the Boeing 737 after landing, noting that the details of the injuries were not immediately known.

He said the plane flew from Dubai to Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, adding that there were 174 adult passengers, 10 children, two pilots and five crew members on board.

A police officer said that among the dead was one of the pilots, and at least 15 of the wounded were in critical condition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was “saddened by the plane crash in Kozhikode“, indicating that he had spoken to the most elected official in Kerala.

Interior Minister Amit Shah said in a tweet on Twitter that he was distressed when he learned about the tragic accident of an Air India Express plane in Kozhikode.
