Russia is continuing to press for Russia to return the “spoils of the American war” it obtained from the operation in South Ossetia in 2008, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
A number of these requests were made at the highest diplomatic and military levels. Once again, the State Department responded by rejecting such a request.
For nearly 8 years, the United States has steadfastly and persistently called on Russia to return US military equipment, acquired as “loot”, during the operation to deter the Georgian army in South Ossetia in 2008.
The American side is demanding the return of the following equipment: one Land Rover military vehicle, 5 Hummer military vehicles, military communications and navigation systems, pieces of individual firearms. The American side justifies its demands, that it was not a party to the conflict, and did not participate in hostilities.
For its part, Russia rejected all these demands. Commenting on the new periodic refusal, Zakharova said, “Will the partners understand that?”
Zakharova noted that, according to the rules of international law, which the United States often rants about, “spoils of war” may not be returned.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reminded that the protocol signed by the then French President Nicolas Sarkozy confirms the fact that Georgia attacked Russia (against its peacekeepers), which in itself eliminates any questions about Russia’s actions in South Ossetia.
