The Arab League condemns Turkey’s violation of Iraqi airspace and refuses to underestimate international law

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States condemned, on Monday, the military operation launched by Turkey on Sunday in the regions of northern Iraq against the sites of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

According to a statement issued by League’s General Secretariat, “Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, condemned the military operation launched by Turkey in the regions of northern Iraq, allegedly chasing elements of the PKK.”

Aboul Gheit affirms, “The Turkish military intervention represents an objection to Iraqi sovereignty, and it is carried out without coordination with the government in Baghdad, which reflects Ankara’s disdain for international law and its relations with its Arab neighbors alike.”

Aboul Gheit said, an official source in the Arab League’s General Secretariat said, “Turkish military interventions in the Arab territories, whether in Syria, Libya or Iraq, have become a source of concern, rejection and disapproval from all Arab countries.”

The source stressed that “the League Council had adopted a resolution last March condemning the ongoing Turkish interventions in northern Iraq under the title” Taking a unified Arab position towards the Turkish forces’ violation of Iraqi sovereignty. “

The source added that “the decision also stressed the support of the Iraqi government in the actions it takes in accordance with the relevant rules of international law, which aim to withdraw the Turkish government from its forces from Iraqi territory, in order to consolidate the sovereignty of Iraqi government over all of its territory.”

It is noteworthy that the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced, on Sunday, the launch of the military “Operation Claw – Eagle” in northern Iraq against the “Kurdistan Workers Party”.

For years, Turkish forces have carried out intensive operations against Kurdish militants, in both Iraq and Syria, saying this is in response to attacks by or planned by elements of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which Turkey has been fighting for nearly four decades inside and outside the country.
