Russia and China: US sanctions against Syria increase the suffering of its people

Russia and China delegates to the United Nations stressed that the US sanctions against Syria are targeting the Syrian people and increasing their suffering and their continuation is an immoral act in light of Syria’s fighting like the rest of the world in facing the Corona pandemic.

Russia’s representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, said in a speech during a session of the UN Security Council, commenting on the United States’s implementation of the so-called Caesar’s Law that American sanctions against Syria increase the suffering of the Syrian people.

American officials are showing off as we have heard that their sanctions in particular have resulted in the deterioration of the social and economic conditions of the Syrian people to such a degree,” said, according to what Russia’s website reported today.

He added that the European Union, for its part, extended in late May its unilateral measures against Syria, while Russia has repeatedly declared that these measures harm the Syrian economy and hinder the provision of humanitarian aid to the Syrian citizens.

In turn, China’s delegate to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, asked in a similar speech the United States to lift the unilateral measures imposed on Syria, calling for progress in the political process to resolve the crisis in it. To Syria to immediately lift unilateral sanctions.

The Chinese delegate stressed that the years of the Western economic blockade against Syria have caused great hardships for the Syrian people, especially women and children, explaining that US sanctions will inevitably hinder economic and social development in Syria and will narrow the livelihoods of Syrians, as it constitutes an immoral act at a time when Syria is struggling like the rest of the world in face the Corona pandemic.

He also stressed China‘s steadfast stance to support the Syrian-led political process and said that although the Corona epidemic caused additional difficulties for the political process, China firmly believes that the political process in Syria should not stop under any circumstances.

Zhang pointed out that the international community should be warned of terrorists who seek to take advantage of the current situation and should not be allowed to do so.

Syria’s permanent delegate to the United Nations, Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, stressed during the session that the policies of the siege and the imposition of coercive economic measures unilaterally were and still are part of the blind traditional western policies and the other side of terrorism that spilled the blood of the Syrians and destroyed their achievements, stressing the necessity of lifting them.
