Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades stressed today the necessity of the Turkish regime‘s adherence to international law and the cessation of its aggressive and expansionist measures in a number of countries in the region.
“Turkey should recognize the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus and abide by international law,” Anastasiadis said in an interview with the German newspaper, Die Welt, noting that “its gas exploration operations off the coast of Cyprus contravene international law and violate Cypriot sovereignty.”
Anastasiadis pointed out that the illegal practices of the Turkish authorities in the Cypriot waters are part of Turkey‘s “changing policies in the eastern Mediterranean”. Another example of its “expansionist actions is what it is doing in Syria, Libya and against Greece.”
Anastasiades said: The European Union has established a legal framework for the imposition of sanctions in response to Turkey’s gas exploration, yet there is a risk of further escalation by Ankara, which threatens stability and security in the entire region.
