The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malta announced the resignation of the country’s ambassador to Finland on Sunday, after he was criticized for likening the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler.
A statement of Malta’s Foreign Minister, Evarst Bartolo, stated that he accepted Ambassador Michael Zammit Tabona‘s resignation immediately, because his comments “on German Chancellor Angela Merkel are not consistent with the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between Malta and Germany.”
“75 years ago we arrested Hitler,” wrote Michael Zammit Tabona in a Facebook post on Friday, which marked the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe. Who will stop Angela Merkel, who fulfilled Hitler’s dream of controlling Europe?
It is reported that the resigned ambassador has held his post since 2014.
