The permanent delegates reminded the Secretary-General of the content of his recent appeals and statements in this regard, in which he emphasized the need more than ever for solidarity, hope and political will to overcome this crisis together, stressing that achieving this requires all countries to act in a collective, coordinated and decisive manner as responsible members of the international community because facing This risk is a shared responsibility.
In their letter, the delegates of the eight countries emphasized that the governments of the countries affected by this economic blockade possess the political and moral will to act in the face of this danger, but this timing requires the highest level of global solidarity, cooperation and synergy “as it remains difficult to carry out these tasks if not nearly impossible for countries that Suffers from unilateral coercive measures, ”which the United Nations has classified as illegal and grossly violating international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
The letter reviewed the negative effects of unilateral coercive measures, whether at the national level or outside the regional borders, and how these illegal measures hinder the ability of national governments to work with international organizations and to benefit from the international financial system and free trade system and thus undermine the ongoing efforts of governments to combat the Corona virus.
The permanent delegates in the message highlighted the direct negative impact of these illegal measures on human rights to life, health and food, as well as their impact on achieving the basic cooperation and solidarity that should prevail between countries in facing such a pandemic.
The permanent delegates, on behalf of their countries ’governments, urged the Secretary-General of the United Nations to demand the immediate and complete lifting of these unlawful, coercive and arbitrary measures that unilaterally adopt the weapon of economic pressure and demanded that his position in this regard be consistent with the long-term and principled position of the United Nations that refuses to impose coercive unilateral measures.
In the letter, the permanent delegates referred to the recent position of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in which it called for avoiding the collapse of the medical and health system of any country as a result of the unlawful application of unilateral sanctions and for not allowing political accounts to stand in the way of saving human lives.
The delegates’ letter included references to the recent statements of the United Nations Secretary-General in which he stressed the obligation of all governments more than ever to cooperate to revitalize economies, expand public investment, promote trade, and ensure support for people and societies most affected by the disease or more vulnerable to infection, and the need to take urgent measures To relieve the debt burden of the most vulnerable countries and to ensure adequate financial facilities to support countries facing exceptional difficulties in dealing with the spread of this epidemic.
