The United Nations has proposed to use the Tel Abyad crossing on the border between Syria and Turkey to deliver aid to civilians in northeastern Syria.
“If a suitable alternative to Al-Arabiya to transport medical items is not found, the gap between relief and humanitarian needs will widen,” wrote UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his report to the United Nations Security Council, seen by Reuters on Saturday.
“From a security and logistical perspective, in the current circumstances, the Tal Abiad border crossing is the most suitable alternative,” Guterres added
The Guterres report stated that the United Nations was able to transport medicines and medical equipment to northeastern Syria from Damascus by air, but there were no convoys to transport any medical supplies by road.
“Without the consent of the Syrian government and neighboring countries to use border crossings to northeastern Syria, the Security Council will need to grant the United Nations and its implementing partners a mandate to use additional crossings,” Guterres said.
The UN Security Council had asked the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to present a proposal on any possible alternative to the Al-Yarubia crossing on the Syria-Iraq border, which was closed last month with another crossing on the Syrian-Jordanian border.
