Lavrov criticizes the “Deal of the Century” and stresses the role of the international “Quartet”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov questioned the US “deal of the century” as a framework for the Middle East settlement, noting the need to find a solution through multilateral negotiations under the auspices of the international “Quartet”.

Lavrov said in an interview with the Italian newspaper “Stampa” published today, Monday:

The United States has proposed, in its customary style, that one of the oldest conflicts of our time be resolved with a “one blow”, in effect setting the wall on the recognized international legal foundations of the Middle East settlement, which includes Security Council resolutions, the United Nations General Assembly, and the Arab Peace Initiative

Lavrov pointed out that the American project assumes that all the pivotal files related to determining the “final status” of the Palestinian lands, which are borders, settlements, East Jerusalem and refugees, should be resolved through unilateral concessions in the interest of Israel. The Palestinians flatly rejected the so-called deal of the century. “

Lavrov affirmed Moscow’s readiness to contribute to finding compromise solutions to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict within the framework of the international Quartet, which includes Russia, the United States, the United Nations and the European Union, pointing to the necessity of conducting multilateral negotiations under international auspices, which was mentioned in the closing statement of the last meeting of the foreign ministers of the League’s countries Arabic.

He said: “We believe that the Quartet of international mediators can play this role as the only mechanism approved by the United Nations Security Council to follow up on the Middle East peace process. Russia, as a member of the Quartet, is ready to facilitate a compromise.”
