“Achilles heel” detection of all viruses

Researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States of America have discovered a vaccine that can treat most of the viruses that may infect humankind, described as an “Achilles heel” of all viruses.

And Cell Reports reports that the spread of the Corona virus in China has shown that viruses have become a threat to humanity. So in order to resist it, medical experts devise different vaccines. But this method takes a long time, does not help everyone and does not protect against all viruses.

Scientists from the Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States, in cooperation with scientists from the Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany, have discovered that AGO4, one of the Argonaute proteins, has a unique antiviral effect in somatic cells.

In order to demonstrate the effect of this protein, the researchers studied the effect of a number of Argonaute antiviral proteins on laboratory mice, and discovered that poor cells with AGO4 were very sensitive to infection by various viruses, including influenza viruses. This means that a lower level of this protein increases the risk of infectious diseases. Based on these results, the researchers concluded, raising the level of this protein enhances the body’s immunity and protects it from many viruses.

“The aim of this study is to understand how the body’s immune system works, in order to devise effective methods of antiviral treatment, not to create a vaccine against a specific virus,” said Kate Jeffrey, chair of the research team.

It should be noted that in the bodies of mammals and a large number of animals and plants, there are four proteins that inhibit genes are Argonaute (1-4). This protein contributes to the formation and regulation of the activity of RNA and microRNA, that is, it acts as an effective protein in RNA, and this RNA intervention is the most important anti-virus strategy, and the protection of cells from it.

“The next step will be to continue this study, to determine the spectrum of the effect of this protein on any type of virus. Then we have to explain how to increase the activity of AGO4 protein to enhance protection from virus infection,” Jeffrey says.
